"Recycling Do's and Don'ts" post report

Monday, February 13, 2017 - 1:15pm

Margie Hapke, Marco Island resident and Collier County Recycling Co-Ordinator, met with Calusa Garden Club at its meeting on Monday, February 13, to discuss recycling options for Marco Island and Collier County resident.  Margie has worked for Collier County since 2002, and her mission in this capacity is to educate the residents of the county about the importance of recycling and how it helps the county, the residents, and our world.  Ms. Hapke also works with all Collier County recycling contractors and told the Club members about the recycling machine installation that was put in place by Collier County contractor Waste Management.  The machine blows away paper for further processing, removes metallic waste with a series of magnets, and sorts plastic by type.

Ms. Hapke illustrated her presentation with samples of many types of waste such as newspaper,   aluminum beverage cans, cardboard food containers, plastic bottles, plastic bags, and other waste we may not be sure is recyclable in our Marco Island yellow and green recycle container.  For example,  totally clean pizza boxes — without any grease or food waste — are great for recycling since cardboard is a very profitable item to be sold by Collier County to waste paper collectors for further processing into paper pulp.  However, if a pizza box has any food or grease on it at all, that contaminated pizza box will ruin the entire lot of cardboard it is collected with, and the whole lot must be dumped instead of recycled.  Ms Hapke reviewed all the types of items and materials that we can recycle in our personal recycle containers, and also told the group about types of materials we can recycle at the Marco Island Drop Off Recycling Center.

Calusa Garden Club meets the second Monday of each month at Wesley United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 350 S. Barfield Drive, Marco Island.  Business meetings begin at 12:30 p.m. and programs begin at 1:15 p.m.  Calusa Garden Club welcomes visitors interested in our educational programs and visitors interested in membership.  Contact the Garden Club at calusagardenclub@aol.com , or on the Garden Club’s website, calusa.org, or visit the Club’s Facebook page Calusa Garden Club.
